Boston Baked Beans, Lighters and a Fisher

BOSTON BAKED BEANS
2 cups white navy Beans... soak 12 hours.
Drain.... add new water and bring to a boil.  Turn down heat and shimmer for 2 to 3 hrs.
In heavy cast iron pot....add beans
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp Brown sugar
1/4 cup Molasses
1 tsp dry Mustard
2 tsp Tomato Paste.
Then extra Pork Sausages and a little extra cooked Bacon.   Keep moist when cooking on the woodstove for 3 or 4 hours.

Each of us carries 3 or so rabbit snares in a small container on the Skidoo and quad.  You never know when you are going to run out of food.
Each year we buy 4 packages of Bic Lighters  or 20.  We pry off the child safety clip.  If you are really cold or weak you have to be able to keep lighting this until you have a fire going.
We have these in the lunch box, the first aid kit, in every carrying place on the quad and skidoo.  You would be suprised at how many no smokers never have a lighter with them.

Matches now adays are pretty patheticIn the sealed glass jar are old strick anywhere matches.  In the other match boxes are what we are stuck with now adays... to save people from their own stupidity.  The box usually runs out of sticking surface before the matches are used up.

Bryan came back from checking the line and he had a large male Fisher and a Marten.  Ishi doesn't mind Marten but a Fisher is 5 times the size and Ishi is barking and her hair is standing up.

Bryan's Pocket Gear Part 2

In his pockets he always carries two Bic lighters.  The Spot, a Camera and a cotton cloth to wipe the snow off his glasses.

Bryan's Clothing Gear, Generator on Wheels

Leather pack boot is Maverick from Sorel with thick removeable liners.
80 % Wool pants with cargo pockets are made in Canada and go on top of long underwear and he wears a belt plus heavy suspenders.  His thick 75 % Wool shirt is from Woolrich.
These bright orange bib overall are what Loggers and Fallers wear.  They withstand the heavy beating of trail making, and logging and are not easy to melt if too close to a fire.... which most skidoo pants do.
These Maverick Sorel boots have closed rings.  Those half open fasteners that most boots have now a days will trip you good one time too many. It is really hard to find any boot like this one.

The sheepskin/leather cap and black leather mitts are from furhatworld.com
Bryan always wears a ball cap underneath.... the visor keeps the snow out of his glasses.  Also a snud keeps snow from going down his jacket.
The three fingered faller mitts with 100 % Wool put out liners.... plus the Orange Bid Coveralls and heavy duty suspenders are from Savoy Equipment down in Vernon, BC. If anyone wants their email address just contact us.
It has been - 24 C last night and the Generator comes in the cabin at any thing below -12 C.  It is on a wheeled trolley for easy handling along the walkway around the cabin.

Exhaust is about 2 feet from the propane divider.

Socks..... the best for outdoor and winter living

All you wilderness people know how important Socks are.  If your feet are cold you have trouble even before you start.
Bryan always used Icelandic Wool Socks in the 1970's and 80's and paid 12.00 a pair then when people were used to paying 2.00.  His logging crew used to pull the socks up over their wool pants and use Duct Tape to hold them up during the long work day on sidehill.  After a couple of years they became thinner and thinner.
BUT THE REDHEAD LIFETIME GUARANTEE ALL PURPOSE SOCKS FOR MEN  Wool blend socks blow any other sock away.  These are only available through BASSPRO.COM for  9.99 US or 12.00 in the Canadian branches of the store.  Bryan picked us up some when he was visiting his daughter in Calgary at the Basspro Store there.
They never fall down, don't need to be duct taped.  They are really extremely thick even after years and years of use.  The MOST important thing is ....they are so warm.
We use them summer, fall and winter when out in the bush.
Vikki buy's the men's medium (and puts a piece of coloured yarn on them to keep them easy to sort) and Bryan the men's XL.  He has size 13 boots.
Manufactures do not make any women's socks that are worth buying.  You will freeze your feet off in almost anything made directly for women.  The manufactures believe a women is going to be on the ski hill for half an hour and then in the ski chalet for 4 hours.
