Dolly Varden are Spawing Dec. 14, 2012

It is -4 C and the opening is about 20 feet by 40 feet right in front of the cabin.  Even in -20 the Dolly Varden can keep the water open with all their activity.  When there are too many Otter on the lake the Dollies have a real hard time of it.  Their colours are amazing.  Bright blue, vivid orange and snow white fin liners.  This male below is about 18" long and the female about 13".  It is about a foot of water here.  At other places along the lake where it is deeper the bigger Dollies spawn there.  We have up to 30" Dollies here.  Vikki watched them for an hour.  There were about eight pairs in different nests.

  2. Do they have any predators when they are exposed like that?
